I would like to thank the over seven hundred members, guests, concom and staff of DucKon X for a wonderful, successful and enjoyable convention. We experienced a very traumatic event Saturday night but fandom pulled together and we got through it.
A number of DucKon's past Guests of Honor were on hand to help us celebrate our tenth Anniversary. And what a wonderful group they were too! From our two Past Fan Guests of Honor who are still in grade school to such venerable writers as Fred Pohl and Hal Clement, and everything in between. A true testament to the diversity that has come to be associated with DucKon.
DucKon X saw the return of such favorites as the Build-A-Blinkie workshop, (which featured two circuits this year) and the Masquerade, which showcased a small number of very well done costumes. We hosted our first Critter Crunch and got an improptu demonstration of things that go ZOT! in the night. Our Filk programming kept the Oak Room jumping (well at least singing) for three days. And our Children's programming had kids and adults alike clamoring to get in and join the fun!
I believe most of our participants had a good time and enjoyed spending the weekend with seven hundred of their closest friends that they had just met.
I want to extend my thanks to the concom who made DucKon X what it was with their hard work and dedication, before and during the con. I would also like to thank the gophers and other volunteers who worked very hard to keep it running. We couldn't have done it without you.
I also want to thank all of our members. Without you coming and participating in the convention, it would not happen.
RonO,
Chair DucKon X.
As many of you know by now, fandom lost a young member of our community at DucKon. His name is Brock Erhart and he was 14 years old. His parents Bill and Pamela have shared with us, in their own words, the story of Brock's life and the details of his death. We hope that they serve to not only answer the questions that many of you have but to also know a little bit about this young man who passed among us for a brief time.
We know that many people were frustrated by the lack of information available at the con and we apologize for that. Our concern at the time was two-fold: to prevent the release of any information that would negatively effect the investigation by the authorities and to protect the people involved from additional pain and grief.
Bill and Pamela spoke eloquently of their son at his memorial service. His father called him the most courageous person he'd ever known (with the possible exception of his wife), because every day of his life Brock battled the demons inside his mind and conquered his fears. They want people to know about their son's mental illness, and that it is not something to be ashamed of or hidden. That is what we have tried to do here, to help the fannish community know what happened and why, and to say that mental illness should be treated like any other medical condition.
Angela R. Karash, on behalf of the staff of DucKon X.
If there is any message you would like to send to Brock's family, please fee free to include it here, and we will see that it is delivered.
